In 2003, George Matus started offering free tennis lessons to kids growing up in challenging environments. Since then, over 4,000 youth have graduated from the program – keeping kids off the streets between the critical hours of 3-5 PM. Recent studies show sports (tennis in particular) vastly improve youth social skills, self-esteem and academic success in both math and grammar by 51% with over 81% participants attending college. George (a former NCAA D1 tennis athlete) now spends his time expanding the program influencing public policy working closely with governments worldwide creating sustainable youth and community upliftment programs through sports and STEM education. We are excited to host George’s sports program at STYC including youth success stories from local Major League Baseball guest speakers. Stop by the STYC courts to learn more and see the kids in action January 15, 2:00-6:00 and January 16, 4:00-6:00.
