My name is David Kerr and I’m the RC Chairman for Discover the Caribbean 2016 in Ponce. Our NOR is in Yacht Scoring in case somebody wants to come over. Our hottest class is the IC24 group, up until today we have 10 registered boats and we expect a couple of late comers to sign up in the next few days. This year we are going to have umpires for the IC24’s plus debriefings at the end of each regatta day, making it not only very competitive but also educational. Our visiting Umpires are all IU’s. Don Mako USA, Bruce Cook USA and David Pelling CAN are going to be the Umpires. Please let your people know about the event. We have IC24’s for charter, give them my email and phone (787) 638-4878 to see if we can make it happen. Now that I have ur number and email it will be easier to send info to u guys up in STYC.
I’m including a copy of our NOR so u can post it.
Saludos,
David

Boats are beginning to return from the yard where they have been totally re fitted and equalized and masts will be stepped today. We are using the side hallway by the sailing shed as a prep area so please try to use the main entrance to the Club House. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Please come out and help us celebrate the Grand Opening of the Sailing Center on Sunday December, 11th. There will be sailing on ICs and Waves as well as food and drinks. It is shaping up to be an exciting day and we hope to see you there.
MEET DAVE FRANZEL EVENING
10/13/2016
Friday October, 14th 5:00-8:00 PM
Friday night is your opportunity to meet the newest member of the STYC team, Dave Franzel.
Dave will be answering questions about the new sailing programs and opportunities coming to the Club including access to our IC 24 Fleet.
Dave is a competitive racer and professional coach who also enjoys day sailing and cruising with his family. He is the founder of Boston Sailing Center, a business he owned and operated for 30 years. BSC is dedicated to teaching adults from Learn to Sail through Offshore Racing as well as providing opportunities for members to sail, race and cruise without having to own their own boats. BSC grew to become one of the largest and most successful Sailing School/Sailing Clubs in the US.
Since selling BSC in 2007, Dave has been coaching teams in many one design and PHRF classes. He coaches Pro-Am events like Nantucket Race Week and conducts clinics and seminars in conjunction with North U. He personally campaigned Solings and Sonars for many years, finishing third in a Soling World Championship in 2002 and winning a Worlds in the Sonar class in 2009. He has been actively campaigning a J/70 since 2013.
Dave majored in sailing at Rutgers University (okay, there was a math degree involved too) and is the author of the widely acclaimed beginning sailing text:Sailing, The Basics. He has also written articles on sailing and racing for Sail magazine and other print and online publications.
Dave is excited to bring his experience and passion for sailing to the adult sailing programs at the St. Thomas Yacht Club.

A message from Lilibet Pessler on her new film.
It is with great pleasure that we invite you to the Virgin Islands red carpet premiere of the new documentary, “Be Here Now” (The Andy Whitfield Story), by Academy Award Nominated filmmaker, Virgin Islander and STYC member, Lilibet Foster, and PINK OUT! Health Fair and Zumbathon(r) taking place at Prior-Jollek Hall and MCM Center at Antilles School, on Saturday, October 15th.
The red carpet premiere of “Be Here Now” (The Andy Whitfield Story) and PINK OUT! Health Fair and Zumbathon(r) events are sponsored by the Forum, ICMC and Tutu Park Mall, are scheduled to raise awareness in October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, for overall health as well as cancer care with proceeds going to Cancer Support VI and VIVE.
“Be Here Now” (The Andy Whitfield Story) is a love story between superstar, Andy Whitfield, of television’s “Spartacus” fame and his wife, Vashti, on their journey to heal Andy from a cancer diagnosis, in the hopes that by sharing it, they may inspire others as well as shine a light on the need for more cancer research, treatment and care. Their extraordinary and moving journey was captured in this film that won the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the LA Film Festival, and opened in theaters to widespread press coverage, including by Good Morning America and Access Hollywood, and rave reviews with critics calling it, “powerful,” “inspiring” and “…not to be missed.” Both Lilibet and Vashti Whitfield, will join us for a Q&A.
Virgin Islands Vidas Extraordinarias, Inc. (VIVE) presents PINK OUT! a Health Fair & Zumbathon® for breast cancer awareness month. PINK OUT! is being led by St. Thomas’s very own ZUMBA Fitness® instructor, Ms. Gaynel Harris, and the Caribbean’s only ZUMBA Educational Specialist (ZESTM), Ms. Lieschen Montaner of Puerto Rico.
We are attaching invitations for both events. Space will be limited, so if you’d like to reserve tickets now, please go here:
Audiences may reserve tickets for the VI Red Carpet Premiere here: http://www.theforum.vi/

NEW OPPORTUNITIES
8/17/2016
The Board of Governors have been busy the past few months creating another fantastic opportunity at the Club. Thanks to the hard work of Chris Rosenberg, Commodore Nicolosi and co operation of the IC 24 owners the St. Thomas Sailing Center has been formed. The center will be headed by Dave Franzel, founder of the Boston Sailing Center. Dave will bring over thirty years of high level racing and teaching experience to the St. Thomas Yacht Club.
The most exciting component of the sailing center is the fact that after completion of the certification coarse members will then have access to the fleet of seven Club owned IC 24’s.
You no longer need to own a boat to enjoy day sailing.
Congratulations to the Board for creating this awesome opportunity.
Please click on the links below to read about Dave and more information about the new program.

NOTICE OF SPECIAL MEETING
6/30/2016
Please take notice that, pursuant to Article VIII, Section 2.1 of the By-laws of the St. Thomas Yacht Club, a special meeting of the Membership will be held at the St. Thomas Yacht Club commencing at 5:30 pm on Monday, July 11, 2016 for the purposes of voting on a proposed amendment to the By-laws which has been approved by the Board. A copy of the proposed amendment to the By-laws can be found (here).

Today is the last day to register your boat with DPNR without penalty. Unfortunately the Legislature voted to increase mooring fees in the Territory. Also included in the Bill was an increase in the penalty rate. It is now 75.00 dollars per month. This charge will be passed along to those who have not provided proof of registration to the Club by the end of the day
EIGHT BELLS
6/21/2016
I regret to inform the membership of STYC of the passing of Chappy Chapman at the ripe young age of 97. Chappy was a long time member (maybe the oldest) of the Club and had a wonderful life playing tennis until the day before he died. Many new members won’t have known Chappy as he has been in Tennessee since his “home sunk” for a final time a few years ago. Chappy grew up in Southern California and was friends with John Wayne and many other movie stars of the 40’s. He was a sailor often found in Tahiti or some other foreign port. One of his many businesses was El Papagayo at Tillet Gardens serving the islands best Mexican food. He was an inventor of many things, interested in all things and a very interesting character. In his latter years he was known for making his drinks out of the trunk of his car, defending his woman with a flare gun and doing just about whatever he wanted on the tennis courts. A pleasure to know, a memorable character and many still remember his 90th birthday bash held at the club as a helluva a party.
The world needs more Chappy’s. Rest in Peace, which I don’t believe he ever intended to do!
Regards,
Bill Canfield
Attention all STYC Mooring Holders.
Boat registrations are due by the end of June. Please provide the Club with a copy of your new registration. Email, text or drop them by the office please, the earlier the better.
IOR IS HERE!!
6/7/2016
Mid June is approaching and that means two things at the Club. The first is that the International Opti Regatta is here and the second is that Registrations for boats are due by the end of the month.
This year there are over one hundred children registered in the IOR so there will be plenty of activity around the club. Sailors are coming from as far away as California and down island from Dominica. As always we are very excited to host this event with our partners from the Virgin Islands Optimist Dinghy Association and are looking forward to a great event.
The dock will be closed starting this Monday, June 13th and ending Sunday, June 19th. There will still be normal launch service.
MAY 2016
CHOICE WIRELESS TOURNAMENT
5/26/2016
The Choice Wireless VI Open is upon us. Matches get under way this afternoon with the real action starting on Friday. This year’s tournament has attracted over 70 players from around the Caribbean and Mainland States.
Naturally with so many participants, Friday Night Sailing and Friday Night Dinner at the Galley parking spaces will be at a premium. Please be patient and follow the parking attendants instructions and then enjoy some spectacular tennis.
VOLUNTEER PARTY
5/12/2016
May 21st, 4:00 P.M. at the Club
If you volunteered at any of the following events please come by so we may thank you with drinks and appetizers.
St. Thomas International Regatta
Carlos Aguilar Match Race
International Opti Reggata
Choice Wireless Tennis Tournament
It goes without saying that without the support of the Club and all of our volunteers we would not be able to host these fantastic events. Each and everyone of these events brings competitors from around the globe to our little yacht club and allows us to showcase the welcoming attitude of our membership.
From the Membership Committee
Good day STYC Members,
The Membership Committee is in the process of reviewing and revising definitions of certain membership categories. The goal is to have these changes presented for a vote by the membership at a special meeting within the next few months. Prior to finalizing any changes that will be up for vote, I would like to invite all interested members to meet with me and the committee to discuss these changes and offer suggestions as well. The meeting will be held on the deck at 5:30pm on Monday, May 16.
Once these changes have been approved by the Board the Special Meeting notice will be posted for review as per the Club By-Laws. This notice will include the changes to membership types that will be the subject of the special meeting vote.
Thank you and I look forward to your participation,
Christine Sheehan

Good Day STYC Members,
The time of year is approaching when we have to register our boats with D.P.N.R. The department is promising more enforcement in the near future so prompt registration is critical. Once you have registered your boat please bring proof to the Club so we can collect the mooring permits.
Speaking of mooring permits. Many people have not collected their permits from last year. Please come and see me for your sticker.
Congratulations to local sailing hero Taylor Canfield.
Taylor and his crew have won the Congressional Cup at Long Beach Yacht Club for a record Three Years Straight. The Congressional Cup is the oldest Match Race in the world and is in it’s 53rd year. Taylor is now second in wins all time at the Cup trailing STYC’s own Peter Holmberg who has four wins.

FEBRUARY 2016
CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS!!
2/25/2016
To the Members of St. Thomas Yacht Club,
For those that don’t know me, I’m Chuck Pessler, and I need your assistance. I’m currently the Regatta Director of the St. Thomas International Regatta our largest event of the year. For those new to STYC this regatta was sponsored by Rolex for 40 years and was a huge contributor to the Club’s financial bottom line and international reputation. In the past few years we have operated without Rolex because of a change in their corporate marketing strategy but the regatta has continued to thrive but with some loss of revenue. It remains as one of the best-run and liked regattas in the Caribbean.
The dates of the event are March 24 – 27, 2016.
That is where you as members come in with money saving helping hands:
We need housing near the club for our International Jury and Race Officers. This saves the club from renting condos etc. for housing. Your guests really do nothing but sleep in your rooms, homes or condos, absolutely no wear and tear.
With your help we can add $12,000 to your club’s cash flow.
A second large expense is chartering boats for race committee and photographers. We need a number of 20-34 ft. powerboats to help on the water for 3 days. We supply knowledgeable captains and crew and would love you to help also but it is not required. If you have a vessel that could help out we could save another $10 – $15,000 in charter fees.
Final need is volunteers! Many positions will open up between now and the event both off the water and on.
If you have the ability to help in any position, please contact me as soon as possible at cpessler@hotmail.com.
Thanks,
Chuck Pessler
The T-Head portion of the dock will be closed March 4 – 7tht o accommodate guests of the Virgin Islands Optimist Dinghy Championship Regatta
The whole dock will be closed Monday, March 8th for repairs.
Launch service will be available.
The New Member Orientation will be on March 1st at 5:30
The Directory Addendum will be sent out in the next 2 weeks or so. Please review the directory and send any additions or corrections to stycmembership@gmail.com If you are not in the directory please email me immediately with your information for the addendum. In the coming months we will be creating a member’s only page on the STYC website and will have the directory available there and it will be updated each month with new member information.
On Tuesday March, 1st 2016 at 5:30 pm we will hold a new member orientation for anyone who would like to learn more about what the club has to offer. This is open to new and long time members and we hope anyone who takes part will stay for dinner or a drink to mingle and meet other members.
Thank you!

The 2016 Choice Tennis Tournament is happening and we would LOVE your help!
In the absence of a tennis playing event director JP and I have agreed co-chair this year’s tournament. We have rescheduled the event to May 26-30 (Memorial Day Weekend) to give everyone enough time to prepare. We are excited to say that Choice is on board with the date switch and hope that with your support we can pull together a great weekend of tennis!
Lets meet this Wednesday and get the ball rolling. Many hands make light work and there are a lot of small pieces that make this event wonderful. I’ve learned a lot about tennis over the last few weeks and this event has a great reputation.
We hope to see you:
Wednesday January 6th at 5:30 at the STYC
If you can’t make it but would like to help please be in touch! We need all the help we can get!
